This was incredibly well done! I enjoyed it a lot and am excited to see what you do to flesh it out even more.
The style was executed really well, the vivid red against the white snow, the frigidness of the warped depths of the cathedral, the purple noise distorting the screen, it all felt so *cool*, and when it gives way glimpses at a warmer past, it made the world feel all the more unforgiving. Speaking of that, showing the kinds of closeness that could continue to exist in such a ragged world made it all the more compelling (I was reminded of Trigun in this regard). Midnight's goofy off-key expressions in contrast with Marie's indignation and disbelief were the best. This contrast especially suffuses the last stretch, inhuman struggle driven by all too human regrets and desires.
The constant imagery of signals and waves throughout the story was another favorite part of mine, it made what would be fantastical otherwise feel a lot more tangible, the descriptions of these emanations being distorted, it evokes that feeling of static, prickling against the skin, filling the head with noise, creeping into your vision. The way the imagery of waves ties into the pattern of sending and receiving was amazing, the back and forth of signals, of slashes and bullets, of heartbeats, the rhythmn was very palpable.
Pardon the rambling, and for if I was being overly specific! but thanks for putting this out o7
Oughhhhh this game is fantastic!!! It feels so complete too, even if there's CGs and other features to come in the future, I didn't feel like it was lacking in any way. The opening 'cutscene', the little cut-ins with the names of each chapter as well as the hand picking up the bullets, it all oozes so much style and it absolutely fucks.
The story itself is also so well done, one that could fill an entire book neatly told within just 30k words, it's just as long as it needs to be, it doesn't feel like it drags on at any point nor that it's missing something. It's just so well crafted from beginning to end, I'm really impressed.
Midnight is great. I'm particular to narratives about lone wolves like her taking in a 'client' and going on a mission with them to resolve both of their baggages. It's a tried archetype, but a good one. And you wrote it so well! Midnight and Marie's relationship easily carried the first half of the game, and then Midnight's bout at the end and her whole backstory and the whole ending were so bittersweet, I loved it.
Also your art and your expressions especially are great. The character's emotions could be felt, I specifically remember Midnight's goofy grin and Marie's annoyed face as two of my favorites.
You did an amazing job with this one, and I'd love to play it again once the complete version is released!
i've reread this comment about a million times, thank you so so much!!! your words mean the absolute world to me.
i'm really overjoyed to hear that Quickdraw still feels like a complete experience overall despite being rushed for the gamejam... so i'm looking forward to your reactions to Complete! we really want to elevate the presentation, even just a bit.
midnight seems to be the favorite character so far from friends too! she's the focus of the story, so i'm glad people enjoy her. i wrote marie as a kind of outside lens into midnight as a character (like how sherlock holmes is from watson's POV) while also being parallels. i'm glad you enjoyed their dynamic, they were really fun to write!
